• Stay alert. Keep your mind on your job.

• Stand on the shoulder. Stay off the roadway and out of the way of traffic.

• Face traffic—so you can check the path and speed of approaching vehicles.

• Protect yourself.

• Have an escape route planned.

• Leave your post ONLY when you have been relieved.
